Persuade Me!

Dateline: November 10-21, 2008.
I teach one class of Junior English. On this site, I can say that this is my favorite class! They want to learn, and they respond to every challenge that I lay at their feet. Behavior problems are few and far between, mostly because of positive peer pressure within the classroom. A teacher's dream!

We just finished a unit on Persuasion, and I kept finding interesting group projects online. After I explained the four different persuasive projects, I decided to let them sort themselves into groups based on the type of project they wanted to work on:
  • Local political campaign: this group was challenged to create a persuasive campaign to elect a classmate to be the Director of Refuse, running against Jessica Alba
  • Marketing campaign: this group needed all of their persuasive skills to market a new restaurant in Central Park, NYC, serving ecclectic food like hot dog milk shakes, rattlesnake with fries, and chocolate-covered grasshoppers
  • Debate over music downloads: these students needed multiple persuasive elements in order to present their arguments for and against the business of downloading music online
  • Mock Trial: Frank Wolf was on trial for attacking Ms. Strawman, Ms. Woodman, and Ms. Brickman, with charges of Huffing and Puffing without a license, causing chimney damage and ruining the Pigs' dinner. Members of the Prosecution and Defense presented their cases, including a judge and witnesses.
