Book Review: Under Orders by Dick Francis

Dick Francis is a former British steeplechase jockey. Following a decorated career, Dick Francis began a second career as an author of mystery books set in and around the horse racing industry in England.

In this book, former jockey Sid Halley has a second career as a private investigator. He has a false left forearm and hand to replace the hand he lost in a racing accident ten years before. He is hired by three different clients to find out if a trainer and jockey are fixing races, if Internet gambling sites are as above-board as promised, and why an owner’s horses aren’t winning. As it turns out, the three cases are all related.

Following the violent deaths of a jockey and a trainer, both suspected of fixing races, Sid Halley takes a personal interest in finding the killer when the killer tries to warn off Sid by attacking his girlfriend, Marina van der Meer. But Sid doesn’t frighten easily and neither does Marina.

Sid Halley finally tracks down the killer, but not before the killer traps Sid in his own apartment. The final chapters are exciting and full of action, but I refuse to give away the ending of a mystery book!

This book was fun to read, and I enjoyed the Sid Halley character. Dick Francis is obviously familiar with the racing industry in England, so the book has an authenticity of setting, characters, and racing action. I would recommend this book, as well as all of the dozens of others by Mr. Francis.
