Room S217

Dateline: Mid-September, 2008. My home for 30 hours a week is Room S217 on the second floor of the new wing at Van Buren High School. We are just a few steps from the Media Center (Library) and the bathrooms (even more important!)

My largest class is 25, so I have a bit more flexibility in seating arrangement than some of the other teachers. Our desks are triangular, so there are several options for putting them together in groups. A complete hexagon contains six desks, which I use for cooperative learning. My favorite configuration has eight sets of trios—this works really well for quick pair/share opportunities.

On the side of the room where I have my desk, there are lots of bookshelves overhead, counter space, and filing cabinets underneath. I also have a floor to ceiling cabinet that locks. I am still in the process of filling the bookshelves with reading books for students during down times.

I am also fortunate to have five computers in the classroom, along with a printer. This reduces the amount of time that we need to spend in the library or the computer lab and allows students to access the Internet for quick research questions during class.
I am so fortunate to be able to work in such a wonderful facility! I have the use of my mentor's digital projector, so I am able to take advantage of my recent studies in Educational Technology by using PowerPoint and showing film clips from United Streaming and other online sources.
